It was built into a terraced hill on a low ridge around a central courtyard, as was the palace of Knossos. All that remains of this palace are parts of the west and north wings. The other two wings were destroyed by an earthquake in 1450 BC.

Life in Phestos continued even after the earthquake and the destruction of the palace. It was occupried by the Dorians at around 1100 BC and the town was evecuated at 150 BC, when it was attacked by its neighboring town of Gortyna.
