Great experience. No hassle. Delivered car to my hotel which was very convenient. When dropping off, we were driven to the airport by the employee.. I gave 5 stars to the company for their claim that I would not be up sold any additional insurance at the pickup of the car. Fortunately I did not need to test the insurance coverage.

Driving Tips in Heraklion

  1. In Crete (and Heraklion), we drive on the right-hand side. Maximum speed limits on the national road are 80 km/h and 50 km/h within the cities under the condition that there are no speed limit signs.
  2. Give priority to the car that comes from the right.
  3. Respect all traffic rules and signs. Be extremely careful with STOP signs and traffic lights.
  4. Parking is allowed (check signs – avoid parking tickets). Seeing other cars parked does not mean that parking is allowed.
  5. When trying to find a parking spot make sure there are not any signs for programmed constructions or open street markets.
  6. When parking your car in the narrow streets of Heraklion make sure to fold mirrors before leaving the car.
  7. You should never keep luggage/personal belongings inside the car. Breaking into the car is not usual in Crete but it is possible (especially in big free parking areas or in parking areas near the beach etc). It is better to use private or guarded parking areas.

What to see in Heraklion?

Crete is gifted with sheer natural beauty and diverse landscapes. Over the years it has been voted as one of the most popular European holiday destinations. Its capital Heraklion is not only the largest city of the island but also one of the largest cities in Greece. A city of historic importance — Heraklion embodies the Greek spirit with exceptional hospitality, sensational cuisine, breathtaking scenery, historical sites and top-notch entertainment.

Whether you are seeking a beach holiday or to delve deeper into the country’s rich historical past, Heraklion offers endless recreational opportunities.

Crete was once home to the Minoan civilization, today some of its key finds such as the Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys attract millions of visitors who flock here to admire the impressive structures which dated back to the ancient times.

One of Heraklion’s best known archaeological attractions, the Palace of Knossos is situated 5 km south from the city centre of Heraklion. This major city of Crete, as well as one of Europe’s oldest cities was the center of the Minoan civilization. The main attraction is the famous Minoan Palace which was constructed on top of a Neolithic town. Visitors can admire the numerous finds from the palace such as pottery, vessels, original wall paintings and art, which are all housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

The area surrounding the harbour is characterized by the city’s centuries long history, the tales of gods, rebellions and conquerors.

Visit Heraklion's Attractions with a car rental

The Old Harbor of Heraklion is dominated by the imposing Venetian construction, the Koules Fortress which the Italians called Rocca al Mare. For centuries the great walls of the fortress served as protection against the invaders. The cells and dark halls were used as prisons for the Cretan rebels. Today, visitors may enjoy the harbour’s colourful character which is highlighted by traditional fishing boats and numerous tavernas serving freshly prepared seafood dishes.

Strolling through the winding streets of Heraklion you will come across numerous sculptures, statues and busts commemorating significant events and figures of Crete’s history. Watch out for important monuments dedicated to El Greco, Vitsentzos Kornaros, Nikos Kazantzakis and Eleftherios Venizelos, just to name a few. The town itself also houses several impressive Venetian fountains such as the Bembo Fountain, the Priuli Fountain, Palmeti Fountain, Sagredo Fountain and the Morosini Fountain which crowns the Lion Square.

For those seeking to discover the cultural heritage of Crete may visit one of the many museums: Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Natural History Museum, Historical Museum of Crete (displaying the dramatic history of the city of Heraklion), Nikos Kazantzakis Museum dedicated to the famous Greek novelist best known for writing Zorba the Greek, Museum for the Battle of Crete and National Resistance (housing relics from the period of Cretan resistance to occupation between 1941 and 1945), Museum of Visual Arts, and the Cretaquarium which is a great attraction for families with kids.

The Beaches of Heraklion

Crete is blessed with a stunning coastline with diverse shores ranging from quiet and pristine beaches to well organized as well as those awarded with the Blue Flag status. Car hire Heraklion can help you reach these beautiful beaches.

The Red Beach which is situated in the small fishing village of Matala, 75 km south-west of Heraklion was once a popular hippie destination in the 60s, 70s and 80s. One of its distinct attractions is the rocky limestone landscape with interesting carvings and engravings of Minoan figures. A short distance of 2 km from Matala, lies the Kommos Beach where the protected sea turtles Caretta Caretta nest their eggs, from May to September.

At a close proximity from Matala is one of the most picturesque beaches in the area, the Agiofarago Beach which is situated at the exit of the Agiofarago Gorge. Access to this beach is slightly challenging as you will have to drive through a dirt road thus renting an SUV is recommended. Once you park your vehicle there is a 20-30 minute hike through the surrounding cliffs and shrubs. The view is absolutely rewarding. The beach can also be reached by boat from Matala, Agia Galini or Kali Limenes.

For those seeking a quiet and comfortable retreat, a drive towards the small fishing village of Agia Pelagia is highly recommended. Situated approximately 20 km from Heraklion on the way towards Rethymnon, the village is home to some of the most tranquil beaches protected by the north winds, thus the sea is always calm. Here you will find numerous tavernas, bars and watersports activities.
